     About the location

Discover unspoilt and real Greece here. Ancient Epidaurus is a uniquely beautiful coastal village which lies amongst citrus groves and olive orchards by the sea. The smell of thyme, oregano and sage fill the air. You can stroll along foot paths that lead to nature spots or along the narrow streets of the village to shop for handcrafted artefacts and locally produced gourmet food.

Ancient Epidaurus is the birthplace of modern medicine and healing. It was the most celebrated healing centre and health spa in classical times. When you visit the place you will not be surprised as to why this has been the case! In 1988, the Asclepieion of Epidaurus, the healing centre, was included in the World Heritage List. Ancient Epidaurus is also famous for the best preserved ancient theatre where ancient Greek dramas are performed even today, on weekends in summer.

You will experience for yourself the healing effects of the natural surroundings and the sea. Due to the mild climate and the particular location of Ancient Epidaurus it is usually possible to swim from March to October. Today, the village is predominantly a farming community. Visitors are welcomed and can get a good flavour of the traditional Greek way of life. The locals are proud of their heritage and have preserved a number of customs. Local tavernas offer excellent traditional dishes. There are also cafes (or %u2018cafeneio%u2019) where you can enjoy your coffee and refreshments while watching the world go by.

In July, musical concerts are performed in the recently discovered small ancient theatre, which is even older than the famous bigger theatre where the dramas are performed. There is also an exhibition of local products and goods.

Ancient Epidaurus is about two hours%u2019 drive from Athens and located on the eastern side of the Peloponnese. Peloponnese is the southern peninsula of mainland Greece and is surrounded by the sea on all sides except the famous Isthmus that connects the region to mainland Greece. It has been the heart of Greek culture and civilisation for thousands of years. This is the land of the Olympic games, of Hercules and of the great heroes %u2013 the Spartans and the Mycenaeans. There are many other places of archaeological interest and nature spots to visit here. Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece and one of the most beautiful towns in Greece, is only 40-minute drive away. Methana, famous for its volcanic sulphur spas, is about one hour away. Mycenae is also about one hour drive.
